It is sad that immigrants have to deal with discrimination in various aspects in their lives, especially from people who think that immigrants are ‘lesser’ people who can’t even speak English properly.
But who said that English should be the gauge to someone’s intelligence and capabilities, anyway?
A Vietnamese man named Minh Huynh applied for a job opportunity at Dash Delivery in Seattle, Washington. But when he replied to the manager’s email in broken English, the latter mocked his application and threatened to ‘send him home’.
The HR manager told Minh, “Let me tell you now, if you no speak English, I will send you home.” For emphasis, the HR manager underlined the “if you no speak English” part.
It was clear that the HR manager was mocking Minh for his broken English as the reply could have been in correct English and less rude.
Heartbroken and insulted by the email her father had received, Minh’s daughter Emily shared a photo of the email on Twitter; though she covered the manager’s name and the email addresses involved.
“Non-English speakers really have it hard [because] my dad just got rejected from this job offer. All of [the manager’s] emails we’re [sic] also very unprofessional & passive aggressive,” Emily wrote in a Twitter post.
Soon enough, the Twitter post went viral and many called for the manager to be fired for discrimination! Some law firms even volunteered to represent Minh in a lawsuit. A local lawyer contacted Dash Delivery to report the manager’s behavior.
“Our company is an equal opportunity employer and it is proud of its diverse workforce,” a representative from Dash Delivery later emailed Minh and Emily. The email also divulged that the said manager has been fired.
Despite the offers for help in suing the company and the HR manager, Minh decided to just ‘move on’ and find a job elsewhere as he doesn’t want to be confrontational.
His proud daughter posted the update and also shared a photo of her dad’s notebook, telling her growing number of followers that while her dad might not be an expert in English, he’s doing his best to learn everyday…
