Can You Guess YouTube’s Most Viewed Music Videos of 2014?
We all have our favorite music videos for this year but did any of your top picks make it to YouTube’s most viewed music videos of 2014?
As the year comes to an end, it is but appropriate that we leave you with a list of some of the top Billboard Music Hits of 2014 with the most views on YouTube.
You just might be surprised at the videos that actually made it to the ten list.
10 – Black Widow by Iggy Azalea ft. Rita Ora
Taken from The New Classic, Australian rapper Iggy Azalea’s debut album, Black Widow features feminist themes and revenge in failed relationships.
It became the center of controversy because of its similarities to Katy Perry’s Dark Horse.
However, this is understandable because the single was actually meant to be a part of Katy’s Prism album but she handed the demo for Iggy to complete.
The song has since gained over 171,500,000 views on YouTube since it was posted on August 13; despite also gaining a lot of flak. It was listed 8th on Time Magazine’s top 10 worst songs.
9 – Blank Space by Taylor Swift
The song has also drawn some flak for its violent undertones but despite the haters, it actually became a commercial hit.
Uploaded on YouTube on November 10, the video has gained close to 211,000,000 views within just a month!
The single also gave Taylor new bragging rights as the first woman in 56 years to succeed herself at the top spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 after it succeeded Shake It Off.
8 – Break Free by Ariana Grande ft. Zedd
Her girlish voice and cute face did not escape the notice of critical YouTube viewers who thought she was a teenager trying to act older but Ariana is actually 21!
Still, just like the other videos on this list, despite the flak, this became a hit after it was uploaded on August 12.
To date, the song garnered over 213,000,000 views and sold over 1.3 million copies in the US.
7 – Summer by Calvin Harris
This is among the simplest songs in this list yet it was able to garner close to 314,000,000 views on YouTube ever since it was uploaded last April 6.
Perhaps it is because of the chic ladies in the video.
It was listed on Time Magazine’s top 10 worst songs as #7 yet the YouTube views and the digital downloads speak volumes of how many people truly enjoyed this song.
6 – Anaconda by Nicki Minaj
A lot of people are critical of Nicki Minaj yet this sultry singer never fails to amaze us.
She has once again released a video so popular that it has close to 334,000,000 views ever since its upload on August 19.
The video perhaps the weirdest and the raunchiest in this lot – but something you actually expect from Nicki.
The lyrics do not make a lot of sense but the judging from the YouTube hits, her fans did not mind.
5 – Shake It Off by Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift’s Shake it Off single was well received by fans across the world, especially because of its upbeat music and great lyrics that many people can relate to.
It was no wonder the song was not just a commercial success but also topped major billboards for weeks.
On YouTube, the official video received over 384,000,000 views.
4 – Chandelier by Sia
This melancholic song gained praise worldwide, not just because of Sia’s excellent voice quality but because of its dramatic lyrics.
It reveals the typical thought processes of an alcoholic ‘party girl’.
It does look a little weird for many people to see a young dancer in skin-tone leotards portray the party girl in the video but to date, the YouTube clip has garnered close to 390,000,000 views.
3 – All About That Bass by Meghan Trainor
All About That Bass is one of the year’s most controversial songs – either you love it or hate it.
A lot of people are slamming Meghan Trainor for glorifying plus size in this song yet many are also saying it is high time we get rid of the Barbie doll as the standard for women’s beauty.
The song ranks fifth on Time Magazine’s top 10 worst songs but the YouTube video is so popular that it gained close to 395,000,000 to date.
It also sparked scores of parodies and hilarious covers.
2 – Fancy (Explicit) by Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX
Gaining close to 399,000,000 views since it was uploaded on YouTube on March 4, this single was truly a success.
It topped the charts for weeks. It is the first Billboard top hit for both Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX.
Perhaps, another key to its popularity lies in its parallelism with popular 90s movie, Clueless. The official music video pays homage to Clueless, including cheerleading shots and other scenes from the blockbuster hit.
1 – Wiggle by Jason Derulo ft. Snoop Dogg
Our list is topped by Wiggle, a song by Jason Derulo, featuring Snoop Dogg.
A lot of people hated the song, slamming it for its dirty lyrics and simple music yet those critical thoughts did not deter the clip from topping this hit list.
The raunchy video is so popular it garnered more than 412,000,000 views ever since it was uploaded on YouTube on May 21.
There are still a few more days left before the year ends.
It is possible the list is going to change slightly by the end of the year – or another big hit will surprise us [like Psy’s Gangnam Style literally breaking the net with views of over 2 billion!].
One this is for sure, no one can truly predict which songs would become a hit among the listeners and YouTube viewers.
