Mathematics is unarguably one of the least favorite subjects taught across all school levels.
Teachers must find a way to make the lessons more interesting just to ensure that the kids get to learn their numbers without hating the subject for life.
After all, Math also has some of the most common applications in a human being’s life.
For this reason, we applaud the teachers of J. E. Johnson Elementary School in Prentiss, Mississippi for making Math more fun for their students.
With 470 kids attending the school, you can just imagine how difficult it must be to keep everyone excited about Math but the teachers have found a way to get everyone to love the subject: by creating a daily competition that pits one class with another.
The Math competition is held at the hallway as can be seen in the video which had quickly gone viral after it was posted on Facebook. Every 2:15 PM, classes meet at the hallway for the “Fact Dash” competition.
Flash cards are used to test the children as well as help them remember various Math concepts.
Students from each class try to answer questions about various Math facts for points.
Naturally, the class with the most points wins the “Fact Dash” for the day. Points are collated so that at the end of the month, the class with the most wins/points gets a “blast party” with healthy snacks, fun, and a DJ.
For many netizens, this seems like a waste of time – because it is but a game; however, they fail to take into account that the game sparks the competitive streak in students who will most likely study extra hard so they can win the competition.
Maybe the kids are not really after the actual prize, awesome as it might sound already, but they work hard so they can win!
No matter the outcome of the competition might be, everyone actually wins in some way because they get to learn more while they were having fun! Isn’t that what school is supposed to be, anyway?
Check out a sample of this fun competition featuring teacher Jerel Showers and sixth grade students as videotaped by principal Carrie Hammond-Walker:
We don't have a football, basketball, soccer, or tennis team at our school. But we do have fact dash champions! We compete everyday in the halls, class against class in every grade. It's kinda a big deal! Way bigger than a championship sport's game! #JEJE
